Well, the New Year is well and truly underway, and I have been flat out building our new house with Chris as well as finishing all the drawings for the sequel to Where Lions Roar at Night. It's been a big job! But all going well, the book should be in the bookstores by August. Exciting!

23 September 2009
Yesterday the children and I (and Angel the dog!) went to speak to the children at a school. It was so much fun! The teacher had just finished reading the book to the students and they wanted to meet us and ask us all sorts of questions. The funniest part was when one of the kids asked what my children wanted to be when they grew up. Jacob piped up and said that Milly wants to marry a dairy farmer! They laughed with delight and then started saying a boy's name - he promptly turned quite red...he is the one in the class who dreams of being a farmer. :) Fun. Milly took it very well.
I'm getting the opportunity to speak at lots of schools and it really is so much fun. A delight too, to see how much the book resonates with the children who are reading it. And all the beautiful letters I get from the children!!! When we move into our new house and I set up the office, I'm going to put a whole lot of them up on my wall. :)

24 August 2009
I am heading off on a short lower North Island tour this Sunday.  Places visited will be Foxton, Levin, Marton, Taupo, Auckland.

23 June 2009
Today I finished the first draft of the sequel to Where Lions Roar at Night. I have drawn about thirty of the illustrations so am well on the way!

28 May 2009
We heard some tragic news today. Dalu, the man from Zion Wildlife Gardens who came and talked to us at my book launch, was mauled by a white tiger and killed. Terrible. He was such a kind, caring man. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and all his friends at the Lion Park.

Book Launch on the 16th April 2009

book launch

We had a wonderful time at the book launch! About 100 people came and crowded into the shop and spilled out into the Strand Arcade.

fiddlelore

Fiddlelore played while we had drinks and nibbles and then we started the more formal proceedings.

book launch

Storytime introduced me and I talked for a wee while about our life in the barn and what inspired me to write Where Lions Roar at Night.  :)

Dalu the Lion Man

My children did a puppet show and we had a talk from Dalu, one of the lion men at the Zion Wildlife Gardens.

launch

Jake and Sam came in their usual gear - coon hats and bows and arrows.

Jess Foote presents prizes

Jessie Foote (my artist niece) had a challenging time trying to sort through all the fantastic art work that the children had done and find some winners. I didn't envy her the job!! Well done, to all of you who drew such fearsome and colourful lions!! (I've posted most of them below.)

We had hot chocolates and marshmallows and more music from Fiddlelore, and then plenty of time to chat with everyone. Thanks so much for coming and for buying a copy of the book - I hope you LOVE it!

"Our eldest is four and he loves Where Lions Roar at Night. Pure, real, tangible, sense enhancing reading." ~ Fleur, mother

"Thank you so much for writing such an amazing book. I read the whole thing in less than 24 hours and have begun reading it to our children.  We also have 6 children and just that fact alone hooked them in, but I was totally incredulous at the fact that I had them all begging for me to keep reading, my children NEVER do that!!!, they often find reading time is not their favourite time of the day as they would rather be out exploring like the children in the story.  My husband marvelled at the fact that the children all sat perfectly still and didn’t make a peep during reading last night.  And "Poppa" (Grandad) was just as drawn in and wants to find out what happens next.  We can’t wait for the sequel (oh we do so hope there is one)

I was actually one of the blessed people to win your book the other day on radio Rhema so I am so very grateful.  Thank you for finally giving my children a reason to look forward to reading time.  We can’t wait for the sequel (oh we do so hope there is one) "

"Thank you so much for writing such a wonderful book! Our children (we have 8) all LOVED it.  It is one of their all-time favorites.  We can't wait to read the next installment!  You remind me of the special effect that Laura Ingalls Wilder said she was trying to put into her stories - I can't remember exactly how she worded it but it was something like a golden thread of hope and love and you certainly achieved that. Thank you so much." ~Gwenda, NZ

“I loved hearing how Aslan the Lion lived just along the road and I wanted to play on the rope swing by Black Rabbit Island. I liked how the children surprised their parents for their wedding anniversary. That was a fantastic idea!”  ~ Benjamin, age 9

“This story is a fantastic and engaging read. The characters are inspiring. I didn't want to put it down. Exciting and written for all ages, it makes for a very good read by the fire on a winter's night.” Rachel, 16

“This book is a winner! We devoured it as a ‘family read’ in less than a week. Many chores were left undone as my family pleaded for “just one more chapter, Mum!” again and again. We got to know each family member as a close friend, laughing at their antics, sharing their adventures with enthusiasm and their crises with bated breath. This is the captivating, real life story of a Kiwi family that every reader would want to know and be a part of, a family who cares for each other and shares each other’s triumphs and losses. It’s about creativity, making the most of life’s ups and downs, dancing in the puddles (or canoeing in the floodwaters) on rainy days and living the great adventure with whatever’s at hand. Where Lions Roar at Night is more than the New Zealand family biography that we’ve been longing to read, it’s an inspiration to families and readers of all ages. We can’t wait for the next installment!”  ~ Jenni Anderson, mother
