I had written most of Where Lions Roar at Night by June 2008. The 26th of that month dawned fine, after a wild and wet night. It was Sam's tenth birthday.
After opening presents and a birthday breakfast we all headed outside to watch Sam try out his present - a recurve bow and arrows! He was so excited. We all had turns, and after a while I left Sam and Jake to it and  headed down to the river to see Milly's ducks. On the way back, I slipped while crossing Smoking Bridge - the log onto Black Rabbit Island.

I ended up in hospital with a shattered tibial plateau. That meant I was in hospital for a week to get pins and a plate, and then was on bed rest for some time. But during the next six weeks while I was on crutches, I discovered the hidden blessing! The enforced rest gave me time to draw all the illustrations for my book! The children got inspired as they watched me draw, and joined in the fun.
Kate drew the lion and I loved him so much, I used him at the beginning of each chapter!
Even Jake and Sam drew some pictures which found their way into the book!

This is Jake's gorgeous picture of Tilly the fantail who came into the barn one morning and got rid of all the little flies that were pestering us!

Eliza drew a lovely picture of Peony

Kate took time out of her busy days to draw some really amazing pictures - if she had been able to spare the time, I would have asked her to draw all the illustrations!

However she couldn't spare the time to do all the illustrations, so that, along with my accident, forced me to pick up my own pencil and start drawing....

One of the really fun drawings which Sam helped me with, was the map of our land. I know how much I've enjoyed pouring over maps in The Lord of the Rings and the Narnia series, and sure enough, I've had lots of children tell me how much they enjoy finding all the places on our map, too.

“An awesome book - everyone should read it! Parts of it are very funny. I didn't want Mum to stop reading it. The characters come alive - it made me want to meet them.” ~ Sarah, age 11

“I loved hearing how Aslan the Lion lived just along the road and I wanted to play on the rope swing by Black Rabbit Island. I liked how the children surprised their parents for their wedding anniversary. That was a fantastic idea!”  ~ Benjamin, age 9

“This story is a fantastic and engaging read. The characters are inspiring. I didn't want to put it down. Exciting and written for all ages, it makes for a very good read by the fire on a winter's night.” Rachel, 16

“This book is a winner! We devoured it as a ‘family read’ in less than a week. Many chores were left undone as my family pleaded for “just one more chapter, Mum!” again and again. We got to know each family member as a close friend, laughing at their antics, sharing their adventures with enthusiasm and their crises with bated breath. This is the captivating, real life story of a Kiwi family that every reader would want to know and be a part of, a family who cares for each other and shares each other’s triumphs and losses. It’s about creativity, making the most of life’s ups and downs, dancing in the puddles (or canoeing in the floodwaters) on rainy days and living the great adventure with whatever’s at hand. Where Lions Roar at Night is more than the New Zealand family biography that we’ve been longing to read, it’s an inspiration to families and readers of all ages. We can’t wait for the next installment!”  ~ Jenni Anderson, motherdancing in puddles

"A very good story - exciting, funny, surprising. This is one I'll enjoy reading over and over.”  ~ Ben, age 13
